Our History

Serving the University of Michigan since 1917.

The University of Michigan's Lutheran campus ministry was created in 1917 by Zion Lutheran Church and Trinity Lutheran Church to provide students with a space to explore Lutheran Christianity and build community.

The campus ministry grew through the next decades, sharing God's love with students by offering Bible studies, forming a choir, hosting retreats and more.

In 1945, the campus ministry purchased the house at our current location and opened a Lutheran Student Center. In 1955, construction on our current building was completed.

In 1971, Lord of Light Lutheran Church (LoL) was created as a congregation tied to the student ministry. In 1987, LoL affirmed its full, enthusiastic welcome and inclusion of LGBTQ+ people as a Reconciling in Christ congregation. We continue to worship as an inclusive, intergenerational community whose rhythm centers around the University of Michigan's academic calendar.
